Brief Description : Coupled structure and fluid flow analysis for Vortex Induced vibrations of splitter plate.
Structural and mechanical oscillations of structures immersed in or conveying fluid flow as a result of an
interaction between the fluid-dynamic forces and the inertia, damping, and elastic forces in the structures is
known as FLOW INDUCED VIBRATIONS (FIV).
Even for steady flow conditions, vibration problems may be caused by vortex shedding behind obstacles or
by other phenomena
A simple case of a splitter plate (also known as Wake Stabilizer) has been taken for analysis. Free vibration
analysis and flow analysis is done separately over the same plate.
Structural (vibrations) and flow (flow separation and formation of vortices) behavior has been noticed.
Effect of vortices on the structure can be analyzed by coupling of transient structural and fluent fluid flow
(FSI simulation) in Ansys 14. The influence of the Reynolds number, material properties and geometric
non-linearity on the plate's deformation is studied.
Periodic steady-state results of the current investigation show that the magnitude of the inlet fluid velocity,
elasticity of the plate, and the height of the body has respective profound effect on deflection and the
oscillations of the splitter plate.
