Volunteer Experience

[January 2018 – May 2018] Volunteer at the Children of Fire Charity

From January 2018 to April 2018, I volunteered with the charity Children of Fire as a legal intern. Children of Fire is a charity that focuses on helping children who are burn survives particularly those from low-income households. The charity attempts to ensure that children under its supervision are provided with quality medical treatment, psychological support and education to provide the children with the necessary skills for a seamless reintegration into society and a better quality of life. The charity also conducts educational programs in high-risk areas such as squatter camps, where fires are a lot more common than other residential areas. The programs attempt to teach the general public on simple changes one could make in their life to drastically decrease the chances of starting an out of control fire and injuring those around them. This is but a few examples of the initiatives undertaken by Children of fire Charity.

Working with this charity has been a fruitful experience the work has proved to be challenging but manageable and I continued to develop my legal expertise particularly with matters related to Family Law and Human Rights Law.

[June – November 2018] Attended Practical Legal Training

During this time I completed my Practical Legal Training (PLT) at The Law Society of South Africa’s (LSSA) Legal Education and Development (LEAD) course. Which is a course focused on ensuring that students are prepared for the world of work in a legal environment. It focuses on developing all the practical skills that a student will likely need while working in a law firm such as understanding court procedure, litigation techniques, drafting contracts and drafting legal pleadings to name a few skills that they focus on.

Work Experience

[April 2020 – Current] Junior Attorney at Mphakathi Attorneys

As a Junior Attorney, I assist my senior with several duties which include but are not limited to litigation in lower courts research, legal drafting (Contracts and Pleadings), client consultations, court filing and office administration. I am also responsible for litigation in lower Courts and appearances at the CCMA, Bargaining Councils and Tribunals.

[March 2019 – March 2020] Practical Vocational Training (Articles) at Mphakathi Attorneys

I completed my Practical Vocation Training at Mphakathi Attorneys in Krugersdorp which is a general practice law firm where we offer both Civil and Criminal Litigation. We help a lot of low-income individuals with various legal matters including but not limited to; Matrimonial Matters, labour Matters, Evictions and Criminal Matters.

[December 2018– February 2019] Intern at Huang Attorneys

My first taste of practical work experience was at Huang Attorneys as an intern where I got the opportunity to exercise what I have learned during my Practical Legal Training (PLT) and developed further as a legal practitioner with first-hand experience.

Additional Skills

I have a good understanding of Microsoft products such as Word and PowerPoint.

I am very well acquainted with the Windows operating system and I always know how to solve novel problems.

I am highly proficient in conducting online research and navigating online sources.

I type at a reasonably fast speed which is about 35 wpm.
