Drug Design, Biotechnology and Pharmaceutical Industry Jan 2020 – Jun 2020

• This whole process of new oral drug exploration guided by Dr. Evgeny Vulfson is to help females of reproductive age (21 – 44 years) get pregnant through the ovulation induction by activating kisspeptin 1 receptor (KISS1R) and thus, increasing the secretion of reproductive hormones, including gonadotropin- releasing hormone (GnRH), follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH), and luteinizing hormone (LH).

• The entire process included: researching disease background, identifying a novel target for oral drug, coming up with a lead structure, researching on appropriate methods to conduct direct target assays and cell assays, coming up new chemical entities (NCE), identifying the best NCE through structural activity relationship

(SAR), identifying both on-and off-target toxicities, drafting the best NCE profile, identifying assays to assess properties of the best NCE, identifying the disease, mechanism, and efficacy biomarker for phase I, identifying the efficacy biomarker for phase II, searching for proper animal disease models, estimating the no observed adverse effect level dose (NOAEL), intermediate dose, and maximum tolerated dose (MTD), calculating therapeutic index (TI), determining human equivalent dose (HED) and maximum recommended starting dose

(MRSD), phase I clinical trial, phase II clinical trial, phase III clinical trial, and creating a target product profile (TPP)-like table for the new drug.

Biosensor Design, Biosensors and Biochips Sep 2019 – Dec 2019

• This biosensor design guided by Dr. Evgeny Vulfson is to help beta-thalassemia patients determine their needs to receive blood transfusion. Beta-thalassemia patients usually need regular blood transfusion, which may lead to excess heavy metals, especially iron, in patients’ blood. Iron overload may cause some severe effects on human bodies. This biosensor helps the patients evaluate their needs to receive blood transfusion through measuring the iron-bound transferrin (Tf) in blood samples.

• The essence of this biosensor relies on enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA), which determines both the concentration of Fe3+ bound Tf and the percentage of Fe3+ bound Tf. LEADERSHIP ACTIVITIES
