Current job Fresh Ideas Food Service Management with Einstein Bros. Bagels

I would like to share with you my current job up on Purdue Fort Wayne Indiana campus. I started out back in September of 2023 which at that time was, Aladdin Food Management Services and switched to a new management group this year, January 2024 with Fresh Ideas Food Service Management. I started out with one group and had to end it at the end of 2023 and start all over again with a new management group come first of the year when campus resumed the semester from winter break. So, I thought I was working at the main dining area, Walb Student Union but was placed to work at a Bagel shop on campus, Einstein Bros. Bagels located in Kettler Hall across the campus. They needed the most help so they were sent there to work. I started out with sandwich making on a line from customer’s orders pretty much like any fast-food service. The choice of bagel, what it has on it looking at a food prep sheet so the sandwich is done right for the customer/student. I would grab the right kind of bagels, then slice the bagel and if said toasted would do so, prepare the bagel, wrap up, bag up and call out the number of students/customers and then repeat to the next person in line. I then learned how to serve the special coffee drinks the next day, I learned the register the next day. I picked up these things pretty fast. A lot of fast-food service work experience was like second nature to me. I found myself next after getting the flow of the job helping the student employees out how to do things. A lot of employees/students were from India and Nigeria. Some already knew it, some didn’t have a clue but, again picked it up after guidance and knowhow. I was asked to help out with baking the bagels and all that was to be put out there by 7:30 am. I enjoyed the responsibility of that major task. So I became a fill in baker person as well. Overall, through my whole job so far, I’ve learned the process of opening the bagel shop at 7:30 am and closing down the bagel shop at 7:30 pm and the most important task of all cleaning and being aware of food safety.

Job Skills

Cleaning chemicals and knowhow, food prep guides, opening procedures, closing procedures.

Register, food prep and prepare line, coffee drink station, bagel slicer, bagel toaster, sandwich oven.

Upright 10 tray bagel/food selection oven.

Hand dishwasher, soap, rinse, sanitize station.

Knowhow on the coolers and freezer temp log.

Training other employees from other countries.

Gallatin High School Custodian

I would like to share with you my last job I had back where I came from, Bozeman Montana as a custodian. I started out as a custodial at a newly built High School in Bozeman, Montana in August of 2020. It was pretty much the start of the school year when I started as a custodian. I was put on the day shift that started at 6 am to 2:30 pm. I was told that we were not just a custodian but the security of the school as well. The first thing you do is open up the whole school for the day. We are responsible to unlock the doors from the end of the day and are now ready to be opened up and also you look around for vandalism, damages, maintenance issues and report to the head custodian if found. When there were snow days, I would have to first take care of the entrances and fire exits around the whole school. Others were responsible for the walks and parking lots. School is now getting ready for the students to arrive. I was responsible for setting up breakfast that included setting out all the lunch tables that were put away in storage or out of the way at the end of the day. My responsibility was to also care for trash, if it was left behind from the previous day that night crew didn’t get to. I cleaned dirty tables, debris on floors just making the commons area and school ready to open for business. I also took care of the outside trash cans. Throughout the day until lunchtime, I would do custodial duties assigned from the head custodian. It included gathering things, building projects, setting up, taking down and most important cleaning tasks. Then it’s time to set up for lunch, setting more lunch tables out onto first and second floor commons areas and trash cans out where students can have access to throw away their garbage at the end of lunchtime. After lunch we are basically at our last task of the day cleaning up after lunch until the end of my shift. That was a typical day for me. During spring breaks there was less foot traffic and events going on. The head custodian assigns areas to super clean and just take care of. Using sit down and stand-up scrubbers on the floors, taking major care of restrooms and gyms. At the end of the school year, we had summer break. This is where most custodians are at their busiest times. In the mornings I took care of the grounds. I was in charge of picking up litter, trimming, lawn mowing with push mowers and Skaggs type riding lawn mower depending on what area whether it was hilly, curbing areas or fields. After this we would come in to get major duties done inside the high school. Major repairs and filters were done by the head and supervising custodians. Anything major was dealt with by professionals. Inside jobs would include deep cleaning classrooms, restrooms, commons areas, windows, gyms, stairs, stairwells, hallways, and elevators. I would use different cleaning solutions, stripping, and waxing, disinfecting, neutral cleaners and had to know what to use. We used different chemicals on different floors. I was taught the difference. I had to know what to use in the different cleaning equipment which included sit down/stand up scrubbers, heavy-duty corded upright handheld scrubbers with changeable pads and various mops. We did all this so the school is nice and clean for the beginning of the school year. The job in general is always on your feet. We also were busy helping out different schools around the district. We helped with special events the district had such as plays, athletic activities, operas, ballets and any event the school's facilities could provide. The most important responsibility that I found we had was the master key to help out teachers, subs, staff and visitors with. Also, a sense of pride because I had to check and log all the fire extinguishers around the high school and check defibrillators once a month.
