Program Manager, Protection Dept. UNHCR, Amman, Jordan: Associate Protection Officer, NOB, Nov 2015 – Dec 2019, Assistant Protection Officer, NOA, Jan 2014 – November 2015:

Built the unit and headed a team of 3 officers to maintain the unit’s duties.

Advocated with local authorities on behalf of asylum seekers and refugees in cases of access denial and deportation. Advocacy resulted in 9,124 asylum seekers and refugees admitted to Jordan, and 5,224 medical cases admitted for medical treatment in Jordan, 672 of whom were war-wounded. More than 15,000 refugees’ expulsion was prohibited as a result of the advocacy.

Monitored the commitment of the local authorities to the principles of non-refoulement, non-penalization, Nondiscrimination, and family reunification. Prepared special weekly, monthly, and annual reports on such commitment to the attention of UNHCR senior management.

Worked as a liaison officer and civil military coordinator with local Jordanian security authorities such as the border guards (BGs), the General Intelligence Department (GID), and the Syrian refugees' affairs department (SRAD). This daily coordination maintained close relations between the UNHCR and these departments. At the same time, it helped facilitating the UNHCR operations in the fields and specifically at the borders.

Facilitated visits to the unofficial crossing points for UNHCR senior officers and UNHCR guest delegations such as the U.S., British, Australian, and Korean embassies; delegations of U.S. Congressmen; individuals such as Nobel laureate Malala Yousafzai; news outlets such as CNN, BBC, Australian Channel 5, news programs such as “60 Minutes;” and UN organizations, such as UNICEF and the IOM.

Co-trained and facilitated the training of 2,000 local security officers, BGs, NGOs, civil departments' officers, and UNHCR officers together with the UNHCR training department. I delivered sessions about the challenges that refugees and asylum seekers encounter, the procedures followed on the borders to admit them into Jordan, and the international standards of treating refugees and most vulnerable people.

Monitored the situation at the borders with Syria and regularly visited asylum seekers and refugees’ crossing points, refugee camps, and registration centers.

Gathered information about the numbers of asylum seekers crossing into Jordan; the numbers of refugees returning back to Syria; the numbers of asylum seekers denied access to Jordan; and circulated these numbers to the UNHCR senior management on a daily basis.

Monitored local and international media and prepared media reports about published stories concerning the political situation inside Syria, refugees' news, and border issues.

Prepared and maintained lists of the aid that the UNHCR supported local security agencies with to enhance their capacity and coordinated the delivery of such aid to these agencies.

Prepared weekly and monthly statistical & analytical reports and circulated it to the attention of UNHCR senior management.

Coordinated and facilitated meetings between the UNHCR representative and high profile Jordanian officials on issues related to refugees and asylum seekers.

Hired and managed a team of 3 people.

Taught two types of courses at the undergraduate level, “American Foreign Policy in the Middle East,” and “History of the Arab World.” My students were American students studying at the University of Jordan and the Amman Ahlyyah University on study abroad programs for a period of 4 months.

International Police Officer in UN peace keeping missions, Bosnia and Herzegovina (Feb 1996 – May 1997), Kosovo (Sep 2000 – Oct 2001), Darfur, Sudan (Dec 2011 – May 2013):

Worked as the deputy team leader of Bijjela IPTF Station in BIH.

Monitored the freedom of movement and the human rights violations committed by the local authorities in the area of responsibility.
