Experience:

AmeriCorps VISTA St Catherine’s Center for Children Albany, New York 06/2016 – 02/2017

Community Outreach and Development Coordinator (Homeless Services)

AmeriCorps VISTA (Sponsored via Siena College) is a federal initiative. Members, also called volunteers in service to America (‘VISTA’s”), serve in some of our nation’s poorest urban and rural areas; creating and expanding programs designed to bring individuals and communities out of poverty. The fellowship opportunity with St. Catherine’s Center for Children, working as a Community Outreach and Development Coordinator allows me to engage the principles of Asset-Based Community Development to optimize the effectiveness of our Homeless Services Department. In this role, I work with department and program directors to analyze community needs, and assist in the design of programs to positively impact the (sheltered & unsheltered adult) homeless population of Albany County. The role requires extensive inter-departmental on-site and off-site coordination; maintaining deadlines and working closely with various department directors as well as the director of the agency. Outreach and development requires considerable research of current initiatives in social science, advocacy, grant writing, and social welfare agendas. Supporting disadvantaged ‘at risk’ populations requires interagency collaboration; on-the-ground networking and relationship building as a routine part of daily duties. As a non-profit, St Catherine’s relies on government grants and private donations to fund our programs. I’ve been fortunate to research, write, and be involved in the coordination of grants for ‘seed funding’ and the procurement of funds for the on-going operational maintenance of programs. Social Service agencies are most effective when they keep a ‘close ear to the ground’, by engaging the community and remaining or becoming as transparent as possible. Initiating ‘buy-in’, and becoming a part of the community is critical to staying relevant and effective. St. Catherine’s regularly engages in info-sharing & marketing campaigns. It has been very exciting to create info-packets, and other marketing materials which keep our organization transparent, works to inform the community, increases community ‘buy-in’, and helps drive policy issues; including recent ‘op-ed’ published in the Siena College Newspaper, ‘The Promethean’, several policy whitepapers, and legislative memos of support.
