What You Will Contribute To Altos

In this role, you will play an essential role in the daily activities of the Mass Spectrometry (MS) Innovation Hub at Altos Labs (Bay Area Institute). As a Hub Scientist, you provide technical expertise for the design and execution of important Altos research projects. You will be part of the Hub team that maintains a diverse instrument park consisting of the latest generation mass spectrometers and liquid chromatography instruments. As well as part of a broader group of Hub researchers who enable new discoveries through detailed studies of biological systems of health and aging.

Responsibilities

Responsible for thoughtful design and execution of a range of experimental methodologies, both established and in-house method development. When relevant, lead the implementation of ideas from the literature, as necessary to meet prioritized Altos goals.

Partner closely with our scientists and research team members to maintain the highest standards throughout the entire process of sample generation, collection, processing, data collection, QC, and analysis.

This includes sample preparation (both manual and automated), and mass spec data acquisition using appropriate scan modes on a wide array of instrumentation (Orbitrap, QQQ, TOF), for which you will receive training to operate where necessary, and may be asked to train and assist others.

You will be expected to maintain and troubleshoot instrumentation, including mass specs, and associated LCs, autosamplers and sample prep automation.

You will strive to consistently deliver the best possible system performance, and troubleshoot issues as they arise, working with vendors to ensure rapid resolution of problems.

This role will also have data analysis responsibilities, independent and in collaboration with others, using various softwares (commercial and in-house developed platforms).

In addition, you will document all sample preparation, method development notes, author scientific reports/publications and protocols/SOPs.

Present results/findings, and collaborate with research associates/assistants, data scientists, and other staff throughout Altos Labs.

Who You Are

Minimum Qualifications

PhD and experience in Mass Spectrometry-based ‘omics, Analytical Chemistry or other relevant discipline, or equivalent experience.

Minimum of 3 years of relevant industry and/or academic experience.

Operational experience and method development using Thermo Orbitrap mass spectrometers as used for proteomics and closely related bioanalytical disciplines

Experience working with and troubleshooting modern LC and MS instruments.

Preferred Qualifications

Preferred operational experience with a broad range of mass spectrometers and related LC systems, including: Bruker timsTOF instruments, SCIEX QQQ, Thermo Orbitrap.

Experience with ESI, and MALDI ionization techniques.

Experience with nano-flow, capillary-flow, and micro-flow LC, and a range of separation techniques.

Experience with multiple of the following disciplines; proteomics, peptidomics, peptide mapping, intact and native protein measurements, lipidomics, metabolomics.

The salary range for Redwood City, CA:

Scientist I, Scientific Technologies: $147,050 - $198,950

Scientist II, Scientific Technologies: $173,000 - $236,400

Exact compensation may vary based on skills, experience, and location.
