Patient Care Assistant (PCA)

Shift: Day, every third weekend

Status: 0.6 FTE 24 hours/week

Unit: H7A Med Surg

Benefits eligible

Pay starts at $19/hour

Pediatric medical/surgical unit which cares for children of all ages who are seen by general medicine; need orthopedic, plastics, and ENT surgery services; or require care for special pathogens.

The Patient Care Assistant is responsible for performing basic supportive care to specified patients/families under the direction and supervision of an RN/Care Manager. Collects, documents, and reports data to the RN Care Manager but does not interpret data. Demonstrates competence in providing age-appropriate care and service for pediatric patients from birth to 21 years, and selected adults.

Responsibilities

Performs clerical office coordination and administrative tasks as necessary.

Collects, documents, and reports vital signs such as: blood pressure or mean arterial pressure, heights, and weights. Completes screening questions and documents all items into medical record.

Promotes general patient safety and performs minor specimen testing. Holds, positions patients and assists with procedures. Preps all materials and supplies as needed.

Remains compliant with HIPAA, maintains professionalism and ensures confidentiality of patient information.

Ensures environmental standards are met and all clinic and patient areas are stocked, cleaned, and maintained.

Identifies learning needs and attends continuing education as appropriate. Participates in educational activities offered by the business unit. Acts as a preceptor of orientation and training of other PCA staff.

Responsible for the transport of non-controlled medications from Pharmacy to designated licensed healthcare practitioners at their discretion or from tube system to secured medication storage room

Qualifications

Education: High school graduate or equivalent.

Licensure: State Tested Nursing Assistant strongly preferred.

Certifications: Current CPR (BLS for healthcare provider required).

Skills:

1. Sound written and verbal communication, interpersonal and problem-solving skills.

2. Demonstrated basic computer skills.

3. Must demonstrate competence as defined in the Patient Care Assistant responsibilities/skills checklist in providing age appropriate care and services to pediatric patients of all ages and selected adult patients.

4. Displays a positive presence and interacts with all levels of staff, outside vendors, consultants, and physicians.

Experience: One year of comparable experience in a hospital setting within the past 3 years. Nursing student can qualify if they have successfully completed the fundamentals of nursing course(s) of an approved college/school program.

MINIMUM PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS Occasionally, 1-33% of the time: Climb stairs/ladder; sitting; lifting/carrying 41-60lbs, 61-100lbs, +100lbs with assistance. May come into contact with fumes, gases, vapors, biohazard waste, machinery, and power tools. Frequently, 34-66% of the time: Squat/kneel; reaching above shoulder; repetitive arm and hand use. Lifting/carrying 040lbs; pushing/pulling 0-61lbs; depth perception-vision. May come into contact with blood, bodily fluids, communicable diseases or pathogens, chemicals, and electricity. Continuously, 67-100% of the time: Standing, walking, audible speech, speech clarity and hearing acuity. Color vision, seeing far/near.
