MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS\:
EDUCATION\: High School Diploma or GED. (TRANSCRIPT REQUIRED)
EXPERIENCE: Two (2) years of administrative or medical office experience; OR Associate’s Degree in lieu of experience. Medical billing and coding certification required.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:
Ability to understand relevant laws and best practices.
Ability to independently perform mathematical functions with financial data.
Knowledge of ICD-10 Official Guidelines for coding and reporting.
Proficient in MS Office and data entry.
Strong analytical, quantitative, and problem-solving skills and excellent verbal and written communication skills.
Ability to maintain confidentiality and manage work responsibilities independently.
Knowledge of grammar and understanding of medical terminology.

JOB SUMMARY/ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS: The Medical Billing Specialist is an important member of the University Health Services (UHS) team, works closely with patients, providers, on and off-site business partners, and UHS staff to perform all aspects of revenue cycle management within University Health Services. This includes filling claims, insurance/patient/departmental billing, coding review, accounts management functions including contracts and credentialing, and other clinically related clerical billing functions.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES\:
Assists in evaluating patients’ financial status and devises payment plans; follow up on delinquent accounts and ensures payments.
Reviews patient billing statements to the ensure accuracy of information.
Reviews and analyzes medical records and patient information to ensure accurate coding and billing.
Inputs concise, clear notes into the billing system describing all activities performed on patient accounts.
Ensures processing of payments from insurance companies, reconciles patient and insurance payments, and performs the daily closeout procedures at the end of each day.
Scans and emails patients’ bills and records after final review of chart.
Enters charges daily; maintains payment status and billing records.
Works closely with providers and other departments to ensure and verify correct diagnosis, date of service, and procedural codes are entered correctly.
Provides backup assistance to medical billing staff, front desk staff, data entry and scans for UHS staff.
Trains medical billing clerks and other personnel in performing data entry.
Performs other related duties as assigned.
