Columbus School for Girls seeks to hire an energetic Learning Specialist (grades PS-5) to cover a maternity leave beginning December 2024 to June 2025. The Learning Specialist is a member of the school's Support Services Department, serving students in preschool through grade five, and reports to the Director of Lower School. The role of the Learning Specialist is to support individual student academic needs, collaborate with faculty in implementing research-based effective practices to meet student needs within the classroom and to coordinate and oversee all standardized testing at the divisional level.

Major Functions and Responsibilities:

Supports Individual Students by:

Provide literacy support to individuals and small groups in Grades 1-3

Provide general academic support in Grades 4 and 5

Effectively provide academic/learning support to promote student confidence, self-advocacy, personal responsibility, and academic growth

Check in regularly with teachers to monitor how effectively accommodations are being implemented and to provide suggestions

Communicate with families, as needed

Supports Division Director by:

Coordinate spring standardized test administration for 3rd-5th graders in the Lower School

Supports Faculty by:

Collaborate with classroom teachers to meet the needs of students identified with learning differences by providing clear, concrete, and reasonable suggestions for classroom practices

Meet weekly with the Program for Young Children teaching teams for support

Attends parent/teacher conferences in the February and May, as needed

Recess and lunch duty as assigned

Experience & Qualifications:

Elementary Education degree, along with a reading endorsement or Literacy Master’s degree

Special Ed or Intervention Specialist background (preferred)

Be able to communicate clearly both orally and in writing

Command a thorough knowledge of learning styles and disabilities

Command a thorough knowledge of specific teaching and learning strategies to address a range of academic difficulties

Be current in specific knowledge and expertise in the areas of differentiated learning theories and practices

Be able to translate teaching and learning strategies for teachers into concrete suggestions for classroom practice

Be well-organized and able to prioritize

Be self-directed, taking initiative in fulfilling the responsibilities of the role

Recognizes that there are limitations to the level of support that Columbus School for Girls can provide
