The Job
The Land Use Services Department is recruiting for Land Use Technician Trainees who process a variety of planning, building, and other development related permit applications, provide information to the public, and perform field investigations for the Department. Incumbents in this classification review development and construction plans for completeness, accuracy, and conformance to regulations; may travel to field sites to gather, research, or verify information; research and compile legal, statistical, demographic, environmental, and historical data; and write reports for a land use team. Additionally, positions may process a variety of special use permit applications related to allowed residential/commercial activities and ensure continued compatibility with surrounding properties.
Trainees work under close supervision while receiving training and acquiring the knowledge and abilities necessary for promotion to Land Use Technician ($53,352 - $73,340 annually).

Positions exist in Planning, Building and Safety, Divisions. The eligible list may be used to fill vacancies in all divisions throughout the County as they arise. Immediate vacancies in San Bernardino and Mountain offices.

CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT
Pre-Employment Process: Applicants must successfully pass a background check prior to appointment.
Travel: Travel throughout the County may be required. Employees will be required to make provision for transportation. At the time of hire, a valid California Class C driver license and proof of automobile liability insurance must be produced for the individual providing the transportation and must be maintained.
Promotion: Land Use Technician Trainees are eligible for promotion to Land Use Technician ($53,352- $73,340 annually) upon meeting job requirements and receiving a satisfactory work progress report, and must qualify for promotion within 12 months or be terminated.
Sponsorship: San Bernardino County is unable to consider candidates who require Visa Sponsorship at this time or in the future. Candidates must be able to present their legal right to work in the United States at the time of employment.
Minimum Requirements
Candidates must meet one of the options below to qualify.
OPTION 1: Six (6 ) months of experience working in San Bernardino County Land Use Services.
OPTION 2: One (1) year of experience assisting the public with interpreting building codes and ordinances, processing permit applications, explaining rules and regulations of a public agency; customer service experience that included fielding and investigating complaints,
OPTION 3: Fifteen (15) semester (or 23 quarter) units of completed college coursework in urban development, building inspection technology, code enforcement, land surveying or a closely related field. A list of related coursework must be submitted with the application.

The ideal candidate will have excellent customer service experience and showcase a positive attitude, especially during peak times.
