We are hiring remote workers for this role in the San Francisco Bay Area, Los Angeles, NYC, or Minneapolis St. Paul areas. At this time, only candidates in these locations will be considered.

What You’ll Do

We’re looking for a Payroll Manager to join our growing team. Reporting to our Director of Accounting, you will independently own payroll processing and related taxes for Calm. You will have the opportunity to partner cross-functionally to ensure our payroll processes are robust and scalable to support Calm's future growth.

Own day-to-day payroll transactions processing in payroll accounting system, preparing payroll account reconciliations, and ensuring month end close are completed timely and in compliance with Company's policy

Ensure each pay cycle is processed accurately and timely

Partner effectively with the Finance and People teams, and other cross-functional teams such as Operations and Legal, to record and process any needed changes each cycle, as well as off-cycle payroll processing requirements

Assist with employee inquiries concerning their pay, W-2s, benefits, etc.

Process associated payroll taxes and payment of employee benefits, including all payroll and benefits reconciliations

Utilize your knowledge and skills to maintain Calm’s compliance with regulatory requirements and best practices as we grow and scale our business throughout the U.S. and globally

Responsible for tracking and driving state and local registration requirements for withholding and UI related compliance

Keep abreast of federal, state, and local legal, benefit and tax requirements by reviewing existing and new legislation

Responsible for responding to and managing payroll related audits from various federal, state and local jurisdictions

Help develop scalable process, policies and compliance across our payroll, timekeeping and benefits practices

Produce and improve regular reporting, as well as ad hoc reports as needed

Maintain strict confidentiality over employee data, ensuring full compliance with data protection laws

Partner cross-functionally to optimize and/or automate our processes within our tech, including being a key player in future HR/payroll system implementations and maintenance

Partner with People team to review and audit employee 401(k) contributions as well as make contribution deposits to 3rd party 401(k) administrators in a timely manner

Ensure timely and accurate W-2 preparations at year end

Who You Are

At least 7 years of payroll processing experience

Experience processing multi-state payroll

Experience with variable compensation

Experience with tax withholdings required for various equity transactions

Experience working with taxing jurisdictions to respond to notices, file registrations, and resolve inquiries

Experience with workers comp reporting and invoicing

Expertise with Google Sheets and Microsoft Excel

A demonstrated ability to achieve goals in ambiguity, and in a fast-paced environment in a flexible manner

Results-oriented individual who operates with the business outcomes in mind while ensuring the best employee experience and driving continuous improvement

Exceptional organizational skills and demonstrated success in meeting deadlines

Demonstrated ability to handle confidential and sensitive information

Experience using Trinet a plus

Minimum Requirements

Experience with processing equity transactions (options, RSUs, IPO)

Benefits administration and strategy experience

Previous payroll system implementation experience

Membership with APA

Calm uses a geographic pay model that determines salaries based on the location where an employee lives. For this position, the base pay ranges across Calm’s pay tiers is as follows:

$ 84,848 - $ 176,000

The base pay range represents the low and high end of Calm’s salary range for this position. Not all candidates will be eligible for the upper end of the salary range. Exact salary will ultimately depend on multiple factors, which include the successful candidate's geographic location, skills, experience and other qualifications.

Calm uses employee zip code to determine which pay range applies.

This role is also eligible for equity + comprehensive benefits + 401k + flexible time off.
