Duties

As a Staff Scientist within the USGS Office of Science Quality and Integrity (OSQI), some of your specific duties will include:

The OSQI Youth and Education in Science (YES) program has broad responsibilities for education and outreach, particularly as they relate to communicating USGS science and developing the future USGS science workforce. The incumbent is responsible for advancing the USGS science strategy by ensuring that the quality and integrity of our science education products is monitored and communicated.

Work for the (YES) functional area lead and must be able to manage critical timelines across multiple projects. Plan and carry out the assignments; resolve most conflicts that arise; coordinate work with others as necessary, interpret policy and regulatory requirements.

Support program needs that may include database management, regular written communication to a range of USGS staff (scientists, Center Directors, HR), training support, document management, program logistics. Provide support for briefing papers, presentations, development and implementation, technical analysis of developing programs.

Work with partners in Federal, State, and Local agencies and in private industry to advance programs in the YES office. Manage a wide variety of assignments simultaneously. Organize work to meet established deadlines. Pivot when needed to support other OSQI functional areas. Identify challenges and think creatively about solutions.

Are There Any Special Requirements For This Position?

Because this position requires travel for official business, the selectee will be required to apply for a charge card within 30 calendar days of appointment. Qualifications

GS-0401 BASIC EDUCATION REQUIREMENT: Applicants must meet A or B below to satisfy the basic education requirement for Biologist, all grade levels.

A. Degree in biological sciences, agriculture, natural resource management, chemistry, or related disciplines appropriate to the position.

**OR

B. Combination of education and experience--courses equivalent to a major, as shown in A above (24 semester hours or the equivalent in biological sciences, agriculture, natural resource management, chemistry, or related disciplines appropriate to the position), plus appropriate experience and/or additional education for a total of 4 years. The education or combined education and experience must be comparable in type, scope and thoroughness to that acquired through successful completion of a 4-year course of study as described in "A" above.

GS-1301 BASIC EDUCATION REQUIREMENT: Applicants must meet A or B below to satisfy the basic education requirement for Physical Scientist, all grade levels.

A. Successful completion of a full 4-year course of study in an accredited college or university leading to a bachelor's or higher degree in physical science, engineering, or mathematics that included 24 semester hours or the equivalent in physical science and/or related engineering science such as mechanics, dynamics, properties of materials, and electronics.

**OR

B. A combination of education and experience--education equivalent to one of the majors shown in "A" above (24 semester hours or the equivalent in physical science, engineering, or mathematics) that included at least 24 semester hours or the equivalent in physical science and/or related engineering science as described above, plus appropriate experience and/or additional education for a total of 4 years. The education or combined education and experience must be comparable in type, scope and thoroughness to that acquired through successful completion of a 4-year course of study as described in "A" above.

For GS-12:

In addition to the basic education requirement as stated above, applicants must meet the following to qualify for the GS-12 level: One year of appropriate professional experience that is in or directly related to the duties of the position to be filled is qualifying if it is equivalent to at least the GS-11 level in the Federal service, and if it equipped the applicant with the knowledge, skills and abilities to perform successfully the duties of the position.

Examples of such experience may include: managing programs or events; managing successful partnerships outside of USGS; using scientific expertise to develop materials and programs for education and outreach for all ages. This work typically involved is novel, having no clear precedents; it required adapting ideas, and developing methods and protocols. At this level, staff scientists have the ability to independently perform work of considerable difficulty.

For GS-13:

In addition to the basic education requirements as stated above, applicants must have one year of appropriate professional experience that is in or directly related to the duties of the position to be filled is qualifying if it is equivalent to at least the GS-12 level in the Federal service, and if it equipped the applicant with the knowledge, skills and abilities to perform successfully the duties of the position.

Examples of such experience may include planning, managing, and reporting on programs and events; developing successful partnerships with other government and non-government entities; developing new programs that require a fresh approach. The complexity of this work typically required extensive modification and adaptation of standard procedures, methods, and techniques, and the development of totally new programs or materials to address novel or unique goals for which guidelines or precedents did not exist. At this level, staff scientists have wide latitude for the exercise of independent judgment to perform work of marked difficulty and responsibility. You must meet all qualification and eligibility requirements for the position by the closing date of the announcement.
