Job Description:

Pennington Biomedical Research Center, a world-renowned academic research institute of Louisiana State University, is seeking an Assistant Laboratory Manager/Medical Technologist in the Clinical Chemistry Laboratory.

The Assistant Lab Manager will be responsible for the day-to-day operations of the Clinical Chemistry Core Laboratory. Job responsibilities are performed in a CLIA and CAP accredited laboratory within an academic environment conducting different types of research.

In this role, the assistant manager will provide supervision of lab personnel, testing procedures, QC and safety checks, and other measures to ensure compliance with CLIA and CAP regulatory requirements and good laboratory practice. This position requires strong problem solving, training, team building and mentoring skills, as well as a good understanding of general laboratory testing methods. Additional responsibilities may include developing new lab policies and procedures according to the Clinical Chemistry Core's role in Pennington Biomedical research protocols.

Major Responsibilities

• Planning and overseeing general laboratory operations and managing assigned workloads.

• Developing, implementing, reviewing, and evaluating QA measures and QC data.

• Recruiting, training, and developing personnel while assessing current staffing needs.

• Ensuring compliance with CAP, CLIA, HIPAA, OSHA and PBRC regulations and standards.

• Assisting lab staff with interpreting, planning, and activating the laboratory portion of clinical trial protocols.

• Serving as liaison to other clinical staff, as well as investigators, physicians, and faculty at Pennington Biomedical and at collaborating sites.

• Performing other duties as directed to facilitate the research mission of Pennington Biomedical.

Required Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in biological science or related field.

• Minimum of three years of experience in a clinical or research laboratory environment.

• Certification as MT, ASCP or equivalent.

• Working knowledge of CAP, CLIA, HIPAA, and OSHA compliance requirements.

• Organization, communication, and leadership skills to work both independently and within a team environment.

• Knowledge of general laboratory systems in the areas of specimen collecting & processing, and the analysis of biospecimens.

• Proficiency in computer usage including Word, Excel, LIS systems, access portals, and electronic data capture.

• Ability to prioritize multiple tasks and demonstrate time management to facilitate schedules and deadlines.

Work hours are primarily weekday with occasional weekends or after-hours commitments. Travel may be required in support of PBRC projects (Health Fairs and Community Outreach), field projects in collaboration with U.S. Department of Defense, and participation as a CAP inspector for peer-based laboratories.
