Summary

This position is located in the Architect of the Capitol (AOC), Office of the Chief of Operations, Superintendent, House Office Buildings (HOB), Assistant Superintendent, Facility Operations Division, Mechanical Systems Branch, Mechanical Systems Day/Evening/Night Sections with an emphasis on industrial pipefitting, or sprinkler systems work.

Duties

This position is emergency essential - Depending on the type of emergency the employee may be required to report to work during emergency situations

Tour Of Duty: Day - 6am-2:30pm; Evening - 2pm -10:30pm; Night -10 pm -6:30am;

Hours may change due to operational needs.

MAJOR DUTIES:

Learns to utilize Building Automation System (BAS) electronic technology to install, monitor, diagnose, repair and maintain multifaceted, diverse vendor products as required to sustain the operations of the U.S. Congress and preserve iconic heritage assets in a protective interior climate, including moisture-controlled preservation requirements related to steam and chilled water piping systems.

Makes repairs that can be accomplished by removing, cleaning, replacing, packing and sealing defective parts of utility, supply and disposal systems such as dirty traps, sections of broken pipe and leaky drains.

Assists with the installation of multiple pipe sizes and materials for plumbing, steam and fire protection within the perimeter of the Capitol Complex.

Learns such trade practices and skills as the proper usage of tools and equipment of the trade; the order of assembling parts and what tools and equipment are needed; how to read blueprints, sketches and technical manuals to understand the functions of the parts or systems, to plan and lay out work and to aid in finding faulty parts or systems; repair techniques to be used including methods used in getting the right fit or tolerances; how to make adjustments and calibrations; how to rebuild, make parts and welding.

Learns to install, modify and repair new and existing high- and low-pressure steam lines, gas and water distribution systems, sanitary and storm sewers, sprinkler and chilled water systems, other miscellaneous piping systems including technical equipment such as ventilation hoods, pumps and standard plumbing equipment, such as toilets, sinks, urinals, water heaters, fountains, drinking water systems, eye washes, safety showers, backflow preventers, etc.

Assists in the maintenance and repair of interior fire prevention sprinkler systems or heating and chilled water infrastructure.

Learns how to utilize Web TMA work order communications that provide specific information on the work to be performed, location of the work site, the kind of repairs to be made and the materials that will be needed.

Responsible for utilizing a thorough knowledge of and compliance with applicable AOC, Office of Congressional Workers’ Rights (OCWR) and Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) safety rules and regulations to ensure that work progresses in a safe manner.

SCREEN-OUT FACTOR: Ability to perform pipefitter worker duties without more than normal supervision:

Showing job responsibility and exercising initiative.

Performs troubleshooting, repair and installing plumbing systems and components.

WG-5:

SCREEN-OUT FACTOR: Ability to do the work of the position without more than normal supervision:

Performing basic mathematical operations such as: addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, and working with simple fractions to take measurements and make calculations needed to complete the task.

Using tools common for the trade including: hacksaws, pipe wrenches, tape measures, levels, and square tools.

Using a computer for communication, accessing information, completing work orders, and maintaining accurate record-keeping.

Reading and interpreting written and oral instructions in order to accomplish the assigned work.
