Position

Summary:

The Lead Teacher/Director at the Hume House Child Development & Student Research Center (CDC) is expected to uphold all program and philosophical foundations of the CDC. They are expected to act with professionalism in all interactions with children, families, and students. The Lead Teacher manages and maintains the high quality, evening care program, and curriculum of the lab school. They supervise one assistant teacher, children ages 5 - 11, and undergraduate student workers.

Director Essential Job Functions:

Creates and updates all enrollment documents in consultation with the Hume House Director, including parent contact information and schedule for evening care children.

Supervises the assistant teacher, student workers, and volunteers. Develops curriculum plans with an assistant teacher and implements activities each evening with children.

Lead Teacher/Child Interactions

Provide consistent guidance for the children during the project and work of the day.

Interacting with respect and loving consistency to the needs of all the children in all situations.

Actively involved in the children’s work and always available for support when needed.

Act as a resource for the children and respond to children’s requests with clear explanations striving to support each child’s understanding.

Using response to invention strategies in altercations between children and with children with improper behavior. Teachers utilize techniques that help children learn appropriate responses to social interactions.

Lead Teacher/Undergraduate Student Interactions

Modeling positive, kind, and developmentally appropriate teacher interactions with children.

Demonstrating positive behavior support techniques.

Lead Teacher/Parent Interactions

Supporting and understanding each parent’s cultural background and family structure.

Maintaining confidentiality of all family information and never communicating personal family information outside the CDC.

Performing other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

& Education:

Bachelor's degree in Elementary or Early Childhood Education or related field.

Minimum of two years of elementary or early childhood teaching experience with children of all abilities between the ages of 5 and 11 years.

Current Director's Credential for Florida.

Must have background check including Fingerprints cleared by DCF fingerprinting organization before the hire date.

Must have First Aid and CPR Certification within 90 days of start date.

Level 2 Background Screening Requirement:

Once an offer of employment is made, the candidate must pass a Florida Level 2 Background Screening.

*The Lead Teacher cannot start working until all background screening results are returned and cleared or until they have received an approved exemption.

Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities:

Highly developed communication skills including, written and oral communication. Adept organizational skills to maintain official assessment data, classroom documentation of children's work, and daily communication with parents.

Knowledge of email, or other technology to maintain constant communication between and among staff and parents.

Ability to communicate effectively with department directors, lead teachers, assistant teachers, parents, and undergraduate students.

Strong interpersonal skills and a high degree of professionalism.

Ability to work as a team and independently.

Ability to work with young children and undergraduate students.

Must be open and understanding of various cultures, ethnicities, languages, and socio-economic levels.

Strong organizational skills to maintain daily operations.

Work Schedule:

The Lead Teacher/Director role is a part-time, 11-month appointment, scheduled from mid-August through mid-July of each year for a total of 1,152 hours annually. The schedule for this role is from Monday to Thursday, 3:30 pm to 9:30 pm.

Work Environment:

Position requires the ability to lift a minimum of 50 lbs.

Ability to observe and maintain the safety of children in various center locations, including a playground, on and off-campus walks, and group events.

Front-facing customer service role on-campus (inside and outside).

Must be able to physically move around the floor and classroom areas without assistance.

As a laboratory of the Department of Psychology at Rollins College, the Hume House Child Development & Student Research Center (CDC) creates opportunities for research and learning with undergraduate students, children of all abilities, and faculty of the College. The Child Development Center Lab contributes to the mission of Rollins College by offering undergraduates the opportunity for research on campus and in the local community. For families, the CDC is a high-quality lab preschool program on campus.
