Job Description

This is paraprofessional work in organizing and overseeing recreational activities on playgrounds, in parks or in recreation centers. The work requires knowledge of the techniques, methods, and procedures used in recreational activities such as games, sports and nature based pursuits, as well as the ability to use and maintain equipment needed for such activities. Contacts require skills in understanding, influencing and communicating with others and are important in providing services to participants. The work is semi-routine in that tasks are covered by standard practices and procedures, but some latitude is permitted to consider the most appropriate practice or procedure to follow and the work is patterned involving similar situations and generally requiring the choice of the correct practice or procedure. The work is performed indoors and outdoors where there are some risks and hazards, but they are known, predictable and controllable. Depending on assignment, may operate a motor vehicle. Operates a computer and standard office equipment. Physical activity is moderate with extended periods of standing or walking, lifting and moving equipment weighing up to 25 pounds. The work is performed under general supervision where the work assignments are varied and, although subject to standard practices and procedures, the worker is permitted some latitude to set own priorities subject to superior's approval.

Examples of Work

Guides, instructs and oversees participants, primarily school-age children, in playground or recreation center activities including games, sports, tournaments, arts and crafts, singing, dancing, entertainment, and homework assistance.

Organizes, coaches, officiates and keeps score of team sports, tournaments, and games.

Demonstrates and observes the use of equipment and materials needed for activities and maintains assigned equipment.

Explains and enforces safety procedures and rules.

Administers emergency first aid. Plans free-play activities and provides input to supervisor for planning activities to be offered in the assigned area of responsibility.

Identifies supply needs for administrative tasks and scheduled programs.

Attends on-site and neighborhood meetings to provide information for promotion of activities, recruitment of volunteers and participants and to consult with individuals to identify recreational needs in the assigned area of responsibility.

Maintains required records on activities and participants for preparation of reports.

Maintains and organizes supplies and assists in daily maintenance of facilities.

Collects cash receipts for fee-based programs.

Schedules rentals of community centers, collects fees, issues permits and coordinates staff coverage for rentals.

May operate a vehicle to collect and deliver supplies.

May operate a van or bus to transport youth to and from the afterschool program and to athletic events.

Some athletic events are held out of town and can be up to a hundred or more miles away.

Department of Transportation (DOT) requires a commercial Driver's License to operate vehicles that transport over sixteen (16) passengers to include the driver.

Also requires the individual to obtain a medical certificate from a DOT certified physician.

May be required to operate a concessions stand, to include ordering and purchasing goods, setting up of concession area, preparation, cooking, and selling items.

May be required to conduct athletic field maintenance, including managing maintenance schedule, filling in holes, fertilizing, dragging field, and mowing, managing hydration/sprinkler system, using basic tools, and contacting City officials for additional applications.

May have to lift and move equipment weighing up to 25 pounds, and be able to endure heat, sun, and humidity associated with an outdoor recreational facility, including inclement weather.

Requires frequent public contact and frequent travel for athletic events/field trips.

Schedule may vary.

Demonstrates proficiency in the City of Jacksonville's competencies.

Performs related work as required.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

Knowledge of rules, practices and procedures associated with outdoor and indoor recreational activities and homework assistance.

Knowledge of safety procedures and rules to be followed during recreational activities.

Skill in overseeing, guiding and instructing children and adults engaged in recreational activities.

Skill in the use and maintenance of equipment needed for outdoor and indoor recreational activities.

Skill in keeping scores of various games and sports.

Ability to read, understand, and follow written materials pertaining to recreational activities and departmental policies and procedures.

Ability to operate a concessions operation.

Ability to operate a van/bus for youth transport.

Ability to perform field repair, to include, water systems, grass maintenance, the use of basic field tools, garden tools, etc.

Ability to lift and move equipment weighing up to 25 pounds.

Ability to handle frequent travel for athletic events/field trips.

Ability to work with Police Athletic league to assist athletics coordinator in recruitment and development of athletic programs to include registration of participants using online database, contact to parents on registration or special events, assist at practices and preparation for game day.

Ability to work game day events.

Ability to stand, be outdoors in all seasons and remain moderately active for up to four hours at a time.

Ability to maintain records and prepare reports.

Ability to communicate effectively, orally and in writing.

Ability to provide instruction and training in rules, practices and procedures associated with outdoor and indoor recreational activities.

Ability to provide homework assistance to grades K - 7th.

Ability to administer emergency first aid.

Ability to interact with the general public applying recognized customer service standards.

Ability to demonstrate leadership and interpersonal skills.

Ability to perform basic mathematical calculations.

Ability to operate standard office equipment and a computer, utilizing word processing and spreadsheet applications.

Ability to handle frequent contact with the public.

Open Requirements/Supplemental Information

Two year combination of education and/or experience in recreation, leisure services, physical education or a related field or in providing services to school-age children, which must include at least one year of experience or education directly related to the recreation or education field. Must pass background screening on a local, state and federal level as required by the State of Florida Children and Family Services. LICENSING/CERTIFICATION/REGISTRATION: FLA CDL License, Class B with P and/or S Endorsement is required prior to appointment in this classification and must be maintained. Must qualify for prior to appointment, obtain, and maintain during employment in this class a City of Jacksonville Certification as a Public Driver. CPR & First Aid Certification Is required prior to appointment & must be maintained. OTHER REQUIREMENTS: This classification performs safety-sensitive functions and is subject to pre-employment, random and other drug/alcohol testing programs as set forth in the City of Jacksonville's Drug Free Workplace Policy (0401).
