Job Description

The National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) is assembling a team to establish a membrane science group to develop and scale-up the fabrication of energy-efficient membranes for a broad application space, including water purification, recovery of critical materials, and carbon capture. NREL is seeking a highly talented and experienced staff scientist in the field of membrane science to develop and execute new research projects alongside an interdisciplinary team of researchers, post-docs, students, and technicians. The successful candidate would lead and manage DOE & non-DOE projects, write research proposals/grants, mentor post-docs, students, and technicians, and lab management. The position will have opportunity to interact with multiple stakeholders, publishing and presenting at conferences, interacting with industries, academics and other national labs, and will be an integral member of the membrane science group at NREL.

Basic QualificationsRelevant Master's Degree . Or, relevant Bachelor's Degree and 2 or more years of experience . General knowledge and application of scientific technical standards, principles, theories, concepts and techniques. Training in team, task or project leadership responsibilities. Intermediate abilities and knowledge of practices and techniques. Beginning experience in project management. Good technical writing, interpersonal and communication skills.

Additional Required Qualifications

Roll-to-Roll fabrication experience in membranes

Membrane characterization experience

Writing and communications

Preferred Qualifications

Preferred Qualifications for Researcher I:

Familiarity with membrane applications such as but not limited to water purification, gas separation, electrochemical separation.

Demonstrated experience with membrane processing and characterization methods, such as auto-coating, liquid transport, and mixed-gas permeation testing.

Preferred Qualifications for Researcher II:

All qualifications for the researcher I position

Demonstrated experience in management of medium-scale projects, working with stakeholders across multiple departments of an organization such as research, operations, finance, and procurement.

Experience with hollow fiber fabrication methods

Experience with proposal/grant writing

Annual Salary Range (based on full-time 40 hours per week)Job Profile: Researcher II / Annual Salary Range: $73,200 - $120,800

Job Profile: Researcher I / Annual Salary Range: $63,600 - $104,900

NREL takes into consideration a candidate’s education, training, and experience, expected quality and quantity of work, required travel (if any), external market and internal value, including seniority and merit systems, and internal pay alignment when determining the salary level for potential new employees.
