This recruitment will fill both Non-KSA and Bilingual Spanish and English Health Assistant 2 positions.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities (KSA): Bilingual in Spanish and English (language testing may be required)

The Primary Care Medical Assistant Apprentice learns during the course of the program to provide clinical support to the patient care team, directed towards the prevention of disease and the promotion of health, using professional clinical support for quality patient care. This position works as part of a care delivery team and works closely with medical, pharmacy,and behavioral health providers and other team members to help ensure the delivery of high-quality patient care.

The Primary Care Medical Assistant Apprentice must maintain enrollment and progress toward completion of the apprenticeship program. The apprenticeship program is an asynchronous online program offered through United We Heal and is free of cost to the employee. The United We Health program is to be completed in 12 months. During this time, the Medical Assistant Apprentice learns the hands-on skills and completes the Live Skills Sheet functions and requirements during their workday, while the online educational component is primarily completed outside of work hours. Creates a work culture of respect, trust and understanding for the highly diverse populations the Health Department serves in the office and in the community. This is a Limited Duration position assignment.

*The tentative start date for this program is August 6, 2024.

As a Health Assistant 2, you will:

Patient Visit Support

Room patients, obtain comprehensive vital signs, complete appropriate screening and collect clinical data used by providers for patient assessment. Prepare patients for exams and procedures, including, but not limited to, equipment set-up and specimen collection.

Complete lab orders as directed by the provider. Monitor Health Maintenance Alerts and administer immunizations and approved injections. Perform phlebotomy, work in the clinic lab as needed.

Perform medical treatment and diagnostic testing as ordered by the provider including but not limited to, ear irrigations, ECG (electrocardiogram), urine dipsticks, INR (international normalized ratio blood test), urine hCG (Human chorionic gonadotropin) and strep throat swabs.

Patient Follow-Up

Provide After Visit Summary (AVS) with instruction as needed, and ensure patient/family understand the next appointment and follow-up actions or events.

Schedule appointments when needed; provide patient education within scope of practice. Assist clients with forms (i.e.: PHQ9) and help encourage MyChart (electronic medical record system) account set-up and navigation. Communicate referrals to the Team Clerical Assistant (TCA) if not done by the provider.

Maintain Clinic Flow

Support back office clinic flow on behalf of patients by reviewing schedules in advance to proactively prepare for client visits (i.e.: scrubbing, huddles, etc.). Support keeping on schedule by managing an efficient work-flow and communicating expected wait times to patient, clinician and front desk staff.

Minimum Qualifications/Transferable Skills*:

Any combination of experience and training that would likely provide the knowledge and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the knowledge and abilities would be as noted below. All non-traditional education, training, and experience will be evaluated.

High School completion or GED certificate

Reads and writes proficiently in English.

Internal candidates (that is current MCHD employee with regular status, temporary, on-call, or limited duration employee) - to apply should be in good standing and have passed probationary period. If you apply, please keep your manager/supervisor informed.

External candidates - who apply will be selected through a competitive recruitment process for the Limited Duration- Health Assistant 2 positions.

Submission of a cover letter detailing interest, skills, and strengths as they apply to the MA Apprenticeship Program. In addition, the employee will describe in the cover letter their interest in the program and becoming a Medical Assistant, understanding of how the program works, including the program requirements and expectations.

Commitment to actively participate and complete the program in 12 months and interest in remaining on with Multnomah County Health Centers after program completion..

Preferred Qualifications:

Fluent in a language other than English or American Sign Language.

Experience working with underserved and marginalized individuals or communities.
