Communications Officer (HYBRID)

The Communications Officer, Small-Scale Sites supports the planning and implementation of the communications and engagement process related to all residential properties and residents involved in the Port Hope Area Initiative (PHAI) cleanup program as it relates to communicating the SSS project life-cycle: property owner consent, characterization, delineation, design, agreement negotiation, remediation, and restoration. The Communications Officer reports to the Communications Manager, Small Scale Sites. Responsibilities include developing communication strategies and supporting communications products to ensure residents and neighborhoods are aware of upcoming work and safety measures. This role supports CNL’s Historic Waste Program Small-Scale Sites Project and focuses on one-on-one communications with the owners and occupants of residential and business properties involved in the PHAI environmental cleanup. The incumbent is responsible for tracking and recording all communication interactions with residents, including actions and follow-up.

What will you be doing!

Communicate information about CNL projects and programs, in a variety of formats, to internal and external audiences.

Inform owners and occupants, and answer their questions, about the PHAI characterization, design, remediation, and restoration of private and municipal properties in the SSS project.

Liaise with the SSS project team and contractors to gather information to provide to owners, and to share and address resident concerns.

Provide general information about the PHAI, CNL, and AECL to interested parties through in-person, phone, and email interactions, and at public events and information sessions.

Develop communication products.

Write content for SSS-specific communications products, including key messages, briefings, and correspondence.

Write content for website and social media posts, media releases, newsletters, and other communications products as required.

Develop PowerPoint presentations for internal and public audiences.

Track and record communication and engagement data.

Maintain accurate, current records of stakeholder interactions per CNL record-keeping requirements.

Track property owner consent to each phase of PHAI work and remove non-consenting owners from the PHAI scope.\

Identify and provide relevant stakeholder engagement data for regulatory and client reports.

Develop communications strategies to address trends in stakeholder concerns and/or misinformation or negative media or social media coverage of CNL projects and programs.

Track trends in stakeholder concerns and analyze media and social media coverage of the SSS project.

In consultation with management, develop and implement communication strategies and tactics to address widespread concerns.

Provide management with timely notification of potential or emerging issues.

Other duties as assigned by your manager.

What we are looking for:

Abilities & Skills:

Excellent written and oral communication skills in English.

Ability to communicate complex technical/scientific information to lay audiences in clear, understandable language.

Ability to discuss sensitive subjects with stakeholders resulting in productive outcomes.

Ability to identify issues that require management attention promptly.

Ability to develop communications strategies/plans to support the requirements of a public information program.

Working knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite.

Valid G Ontario driver's license

Experience:

Minimum five years of experience in public and/or corporate communications, communicating information in written and oral formats, in person, by telephone, and by email, to public and internal audiences.

Experience developing communications products, including fact sheets, media releases, newsletter articles, key messages, and online content for public audiences and for media.

Experience diffusing challenging, emotionally charged discussions about serious topics, such as health, safety, impact to private properties, construction schedules and complaints

Experience working with technical/scientific subject matter experts to gather information to be used in developing communications products.

Education:

University degree/college diploma in Communications, Public Relations, Journalism or related fields.

Security clearance eligibility required:

Reliability Status with Site Access Security Clearance (SASC), which has a minimum requirement of 3 years of verifiable history in Canada, Australia, New Zealand, the United States and/or the United Kingdom.

CNL's Historic Waste Program Management Office is in Port Hope, Ontario's beautiful and historic community. Roughly 100 km east of Toronto, it is still close enough to the “Big City” without all the hassle of being in the “Big City”.
