This vacancy is open to current Federal Title 32 Excepted Technicians employed by Mississippi Army National Guard.

Duties

As a NONDESTRUCTIVE TESTER & INSPECTOR, WG-3705-12, you will perform the full range of Nondestructive Testing (NDT) inspection testing on aircraft, aircraft components, production items such as castings, forgings, weldments, machined parts, and any other assembly or raw material as required. Performs inspections through the application of a wide variety of nondestructive testing methods, such as: magnetic particle, eddy current, ultrasonic, and liquid penetrant.

MAJOR DUTIES:

1. Performs inspections through the application of a variety of nondestructive testing methods and inspection techniques such as:

a. Magnetic Particle (wet, fluorescent, and magnetic particles). Utilizes magnetic particle testing equipment to detect specimen discontinuities, both surface and near-surface such as cracks, casting tears, etc. Selects the proper current determination for magnetic field strength and direction to adequately reveal discontinuities. Sets up and adjusts machine; positions the parts to be inspected. Uses and operates magnetic particle machine to magnetize parts, sprays with solution and demagnetizes after inspection. Operates demagnetization equipment and determines residual field strength measurements. Compares test results with standards provided and accepts or rejects based upon inspection acceptance criteria.

b. Liquid Penetrant (fluorescent dye, post-emulsifiable, hydrophilic and solvent-remove). Uses liquid penetrant testing to detect open to the surface discontinuities such as cracks and porosity. Determines proper dwell time for the test according to sensitivity desired as indicated in the inspection criteria. Compares test results with standards provided and accepts or rejects based upon inspection acceptance criteria.

c. Eddy Current. Utilizes electromagnetic induction principles and related equipment to test object placed in the varying magnetic field of a coil or an array of conductors carrying alternating equipment. Selects the proper electrical test, frequency and coil dependent upon test criteria such as material and specimen shape. Coil shapes include solenoid coils, inside coils, hand-probe coils, fork-shaped coils, and special coil shapes for specific test objects. Compares test results with standards provided and accepts or rejects based upon inspection acceptance criteria.

d. Ultrasonic (pulse echo, through transmission). Utilizes ultrasonic wave propagating equipment requiring an understanding of the laws of sound energy and associated technical mathematics to detect and measure specimen properties such as: the detection of discontinuities, thickness measurement, determination of elastic moduli, determine metallurgical structure, etc. Selects the proper test frequency and transducer for the task dependent upon test criteria such as specimen material, surface condition and geometry. Transducers available are of a wide range of size and shape such as normal beam longitudinal wave, focused beam longitudinal wave, angle beam shear and surface wave, etc. Compares test results with standards provided and accepts or rejects based upon inspection acceptance criteria.

e. Radiographic (various units). Reviews request and establishes procedure to complete the radiographic test. May require developing of images through solutions or other means. Reviews and interprets results of radiograph and compares results with published standard to accept or reject work which was accomplished.

2. Upon certification, will conduct TSQ Evaluations for the AVCRAD's supported region. Provides training assistance to less-experienced operators. Prepares work instructions for review and approval. Keeps abreast of the latest advances in non-destructive testing techniques and processes. Monitors work performed by lower graded non-destructive testers and inspectors and accepts responsibility for material inspected by certifying acceptance or non-acceptance of material per inspection requirements. Performs various duties related to the preparation and storage of NDT records and reports.

3. Uses a wide variety of test, measuring, and diagnostic equipment, which in many cases involves critical tolerances. Sets up, operates, and adjusts a variety of NDTI and associated equipment. Discusses technical problems with engineers and contractor personnel to resolve the malfunction of items as revealed by nondestructive tests. Performs operator maintenance and adjustments on NDT equipment such as mixing and maintaining the proper liquid suspension for the magnetic particle wet method horizontal inspection unit; inspecting and performing minor repairs to cables and electrodes for the magnetic particle inspection units; and performing physical and electrical alignments for calibration purposes on eddy current and ultrasonic equipment.

4. Performs other duties as assigned.
