LDA Certified Medical Assistant (Medical Technicial Assistant 2 – MR05)

The LDA Certified Medical Assistant will join the ROAD MAP (Rural Health and Older ADult Interprofessional Mobile HeAlth Program) team.

ROAD MAP is an initiative led by the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga School of Nursing that assists older adults living in rural Tennessee counties who are at a higher risk for developing chronic diseases, cognitive disorders, and poor health outcomes due to a lack of access to health care, continuity of treatment and resources. This initiative aims to mitigate those risks by delivering health care and social services professionals to rural communities.

The position will be assigned to the Mobile Health Clinic (MHC) and will be responsible for assisting the healthcare provider with patient care, intake, documentation, vaccine and medication administration, clerical, environmental, and organizational tasks. The LDA Certified Medical Assistant will also assist with appointment scheduling and maintaining medical records, as well as support the function of the Mobile Health Clinic and the associated programs. Some overnight travel for training and grant activity may be required.

Duties and Responsibilities\:

Clinical Tasks (Patient-focused)

Perform patient registration, intake & rooming during open clinic hours; check vital signs, height, and weight.; may assist with reviewing medication history and updating medication list; may assist with satisfaction of pertinent health maintenance requirements; medication administration, including injections, as ordered by the health care provider; Point of Care testing (POCT) per standing or provider order; reports patient's condition and reaction to the provider following procedures, medication administration, or treatments; participates in electronic documentation of care at the direction of the provider; and performs venipuncture.

Clinical Tasks (MHC-focused)

Complete CLIA approved waived laboratory tests and practice-specific diagnostic testing in adherence to CLIA standards; perform Quality Control and maintenance for Point of Care in-office lab procedures, as applicable; may be required to assist with collection of specimens of body fluids such as urine and blood for laboratory testing; complete lab requisitions and prepare specimens for pick-up; and assist with maintaining the cleanliness and function of the Mobile Health Clinic per OSHA standards and Mobile Health Clinic Policies and Procedures.

Administrative Tasks

Assist with patient inquiries for prescription refills, appointment scheduling, and referral authorization as needed; responsible for monitoring and maintaining inventory and stock supplies along with emergency medications/equipment specific to the practice setting; and ensure that all ordered laboratory and diagnostic tests are tracked and logged, and that the provider is presented with all test results.

Mobile Health Programs

Assist with health fairs and events; assist with promoting awareness of the Mobile Health Clinic and programs; and other duties as assigned.

The ideal candidate will possess the following\:

Demonstrates the knowledge and skills necessary to provide care for an adult, and/or geriatric population of patients.

Utilizes standard precautions, complies with CHS Policies; Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) standards; Clinical Laboratory Improvement Amendments (CLIA) regulations; and The Joint Commission (TJC), Division of Facility Services (DFS), and other Regulatory Agency standards as applicable to the practice.

Ability to function as a contributing member of an interprofessional team.

Demonstrates knowledge of the special needs of the patient population served.

This position is a Limited Duration Appointment (LDA).

A Limited Duration Appointment (LDA) is a form of regular employment for a specific project or for a limited period. An LDA may be established for up to one year with an option to renew the appointment annually for a maximum of three years. Please note that this position may be converted to a permanent position prior to or at the conclusion of three years, funding dependent.

Minimum qualifications: A relevant medical education and two years of relevant experience, or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience; current American Heart Association (AHA) BLS certificate; recognized/certified as a CMA or RMA by one of the following National Organizations\:

American Association of Medical Assistants (AAMA), National Health Career Association (NHA), National Healthcare Worker’s Association (NHCWA), National Center for Competency Testing (NCCT), American Registry of Medical Assistants (ARMA) American Medical Technologists (AMT), National Association for Health Professionals (NAHP), National Registry of Medical Assistants (NRMA).

Possess one of the following\:

a) Completion of an accredited Medical Assistant program.

b) Intermediate EMT or Paramedic Program with 3 years prior clinical experience required.

c) Structured military training which is clinical in nature per DD214.

d) Graduate of an Accredited School of Professional Nursing.

Preferred Qualifications\: Bilingual in Spanish and English.
