The Opportunity

Position: Technologist (Machinist)

Employment Type: Permanent

Location: 800 Kipling Avenue, Toronto, ON

Department: Nuclear Equipment Solutions

Reports to: Technical Lead, Machine Shop

Hours per week: 40

Accountabilities: How You Will Make an Impact

Collaborate and participate in the design and development of specialized research and testing equipment and fabricate, assemble and install as approved.

Machine or prepare samples/specimens/equipment of various materials to close tolerances, fine finishes, quality and standards required for laboratory testing and delivery to nuclear customers.

Provide technical support to engineering/scientific personnel with respect to planning, conducting and/or overseeing of test programs and conduct research and technical investigations related to NDT examinations and in-plant inspection of components, equipment and systems in the laboratory and at nuclear/thermal stations.

Perform all duties in a safe manner in compliance with Kinectrics policies, Procedures, standards and practices.

Work well with others and have the ability to develop, maintain and foster positive work relationships and environment

What You Need to Succeed

This knowledge is considered to be normally acquired by successful completion of grade 12 in a secondary, commercial or technical school plus 3 year course in the appropriate discipline (precision machining or similar) at a College of Applied Arts and Technology, Polytechnical Institute, Community College or equivalent.

A period up to 5 years is considered necessary to gain this experience

Requires practical hands on machinist experience and knowledge of mechanical and machining principles, practices, procedures and theories relating to the methods of turning, milling, grinding, broaching, jigs and fixtures, including welding processes and blueprint reading.

Requires knowledge of mechanical design principles that relate to the design and development of prototype apparatus and equipment for various experimental projects.

Requires a basic knowledge of computer software for CAD drawings and CAM control software for CNC and EDM machines.

Requires knowledge of dimensional measurements.

Demonstrated good verbal and written communication skills to deal effectively with colleagues and customers and prepare technical reports.

Demonstrated strong interpersonal and organizational skills to receive and provide information to customers.

Experience in a precision machine shop

Experience in utilizing machinery, power tools, quality standards, methods, procedures, practices and work routines.

Familiarity with NDE methods, procedures and equipment is an asset.

Field work at Nuclear facilities may be periodically required as part of this job.

Shift work may be required.

Experience in setting up instrumentation, jigs and equipment for fabrication and testing

Experience in carrying out a variety of tests in accordance with established procedures

Requires experience to assist and participate in the design fabrication and technical support of test facilities, equipment and instrumentation.

Ability to obtain and successfully maintain a valid nuclear site security clearance.
