NEEDED: Fleet Maintenance Technician I (Mechanic)

LOCATION: COLUMBUS CIVIC CENTER 400 4th St, Columbus, GA 31901

HOURS: As Needed/ Event Driven, 7 days a week, Monday-Sunday, 12:00 AM – 12:00 PM

DRESS CODE: Black or brown shoes and black pants

REQUIREMENTS:

Dependable Transportation

Dependable and punctual attendance

Major Duties and Responsibilities:

Performs inspections and preventive maintenance on light vehicles and is periodically required to work in the tire repair shop.

Supervises and trains inmates; maintains records on inmates.

Creates work orders and records.

Opens request orders for parts.

Processes vehicles for salvage and sale at annual city auction. Repairs, maintains and calibrates shop equipment and tools.

This position may require driving shop assigned inmates to and from the prison on a periodic basis.

Carries out a continuous effort to improve operations, work processes and works cooperatively and jointly to provide continuous improvement and customer-driven service.

Performs other related duties as assigned.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

Knowledge of automotive repair and maintenance.

Knowledge of the use of shop equipment and tools.

Knowledge of safety practices and procedures.

Skills in the use of computers.

Skills in interpersonal relations.

Skills in oral and written communication.

Educational and Training Requirements:

Ability to read, write, and perform mathematical calculations at a level commonly associated with the completion of high school or equivalent.

Sufficient experience to understand the basic principles relevant to the major duties of the position, usually associated with the completion of an apprenticeship/internship or having had a similar position for one to two years.

Possession of or ability to readily obtain a valid driver's license issued by the State of Georgia for the type of vehicle or equipment operated.

This position is required to supervise state inmate labor.

Must pass the Department of Corrections three-day certification within the time frame required by the department which is normally six months but may be altered.

Physical Requirements:

Work is typically performed while intermittently sitting, standing, stooping, walking, bending, or crouching.

Frequently lifts light and heavy objects, climbs ladders, uses tools or equipment requiring a high degree of dexterity, and distinguishes between shades of color.
