GMS Troopers and Westonka Community Education are proud to be producing Newsies, Jr. This position will be expected to attend auditions, rehearsals, and all performances. Additionally attendance will be required at production meetings periodically, which will be held after rehearsal hours.
Role and Responsibilities
We are seeking a dedicated, passionate, and responsible high school student to serve as the Student Music Director for our upcoming middle school theatre production of Newsies, Jr. This is an excellent opportunity for a musically talented high schooler interested in gaining experience in teaching, directing, and working with younger actors in a creative and supportive environment. The Student Music Director will work closely with the Music Director and other production staff to support the overall success of the show.
The Student Music Director will help the Music Director during auditions, rehearsals, and tech week with writing music notes and information to be added to the rehearsal reports. At the direction of the Music Director, the SMD will help in rehearsing music, assisting in warm ups, and providing support to the Music Director as needed. As Student Music Director, the SMD helps the Music Director with the tasks of scheduling, rehearsals, casting, and other duties as assigned. This includes, but is not limited to:
Teach and Rehearse music as directed by the Music Director, including soloists, small groups, and the full ensemble
Assist in vocal warm-ups and help students improve their singing techniques
Provide piano during rehearsal (if applicable, not required)
Help the cast understand the emotional and storytelling aspects of the music
Attend all scheduled rehearsals, performances, and production meetings
Assist in organizing and leading music-related activities during rehearsals
Support the production team in ensuring a positive and productive rehearsal environment
Assist in the tech booth under the direction of the Technical Director during the shows to provide music tracks
** This job will not be able to participate in the MWHS Fall Play
Qualifications Requirements
High school student with a strong background in music
Ability to read music - ability to play piano is a bonus but not required
Previous experience in theatre or music performance is a plus
Strong leadership and communication skills
Patience, enthusiasm and a passion for working with young actors
Ability to work collaboratively and take direction for the Music Director and other production staff
Reliable and committed to attending all rehearsals and performances
Reliable and responsible transportation
Salary $500
