AIM OF STUDY
:
The course is aimed at equipping students with skills in investigation, planning, design, construction and maintenance of various types of land drainage systems so as to have sustained irrigated agriculture.

COURSE OBJECTIVE
:
Upon completion of the course students should be able to:
a)Understand the deterioration of agriculture production under Stalinization and sodification in semi-arid and areas.
b)Select the appropriate type of structure for irrigation and drainage networks and prepare a hydraulic design of drainage structures

:
a)An introduction to land drainage, Agricultural criteria for land drainage
b) Soil moistures characteristics, Soil moisture constants, anisotropy, homogeneity, Darcy’s Law, determination of hydraulic conductivity.
c)Drainage investigation and types of drainage system.
d)Surface and subsurface drainage system design. Dupit-Forcheimer theory and Boussinesq equation, Drainage design equations; steady and unsteady state conditions
e)Special types of drains: Mole drain, bio drains, pumped wells and Interceptor drain.
f)Drainage materials, Drainage outlets & Special structures on drainage system.
g)Types of equipments for layout of drainage system.
h)Tube well drainage
i)Operation and maintenance of drainage system.
j)Salinity and sodicity in soils, land reclamation techniques
k)Grouting and dewatering techniques
